Obituary

Obituary for Donald Barron "Barry" Pentony

Donald Barron “Barry” Pentony, 83, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2020 at Canterbury Center.

Born June 26, 1937 in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late Justus and Arbutus Pentony.

Barry was a graduate of Martinsburg High School, Class of 1955, attended Shepherd University where he was a charter member of Tau Kappa Epsilon.

He served with the West Virginia Air National Guard in Martinsburg from 1958 – 1964.

In 1959 he joined Eastern Airlines at Washington National Airport in the Customer Services Division. He transferred to Washington Dulles when it opened in 1962 and in 1965 was transferred to Eastern’s Corporate Headquarters in Miami, FL.

Barry was a Sr. Project Analyst involved in the development of corporate procedures, policies, and speeches. He flew extensively on business and was often involved as a traveling liaison between his company and corporations chartering Eastern Aircraft.

Two of his more enjoyable charter assignments involved traveling with the Hubert H. Humphrey Presidential campaign for ten weeks in 1968 and with the New York Metropolitan Opera for five weeks in 1970 on their first nationwide Spring Tour by air.

In 1985 he joined Fontainebleau Medical Center in Miami as Manager of Administration and remained there until his retirement in 1995.

In 1996 Barry gave in to a desire for some fun retiree employment and was persuaded to join the Golf Operations Department at Doral Golf Resort and Spa in Miami. Doral’s five golf courses were just too inviting to pass up. He remained at Doral until 2001 and enjoyed every day of it, saying it was the best non-job he ever had.

For some time, Barry had been feeling West Virginia’s country roads calling him back and in 2002, after being gone for 43 years, he left Miami and headed North for Martinsburg and home.

Barry was a former member of Florida Keys Elk Lodge 1872 while living in Florida; and a current member of Martinsburg Elks Lodge 778.

He is survived by one brother David; two sisters-in-law, Akiko and Sally Pentony; five nephews; and numerous grand-nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by two brothers, Denny and Richard Arnold.

Graveside service Friday, October 2, 2020 at 1:00PM at Rosedale Cemetery. Visitors will be required to wear face masks, practice social distancing, and follow directives.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to Hospice of the Panhandle in memory of his brother Denny.
