Obituary for Johnny Gilbert Jones

Johnny Gilbert Jones died peacefully at home in Bunker Hill, WV surrounded by his family on July 20, 2020 at the age of 72.

Johnny will be lovingly remembered by his wife and best friend of 50 years, Wilma McKay Jones, children; Jasper (Bonnie), Jeremiah (Christy), Jenica (Steve), and Jodi; sixteen grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and brother David Jones (Brenda). He is preceded in death by his mother Josephine Cortez Jones.

Johnny was born on August 1, 1947 in Taos, New Mexico. He attended Martinsburg High School and graduated from Lord Fairfax Community College with an Associates’ degree in Civil Engineering. Johnny was drafted to serve in the Vietnam War in 1968 and became a decorated combat wounded veteran who received a Bronze Star, Air, and Army Commendation Medals and a Purple Heart. He was a talented custom home builder and business owner. He also loved to fly and earned his pilot license.

Johnny was a devoted father and husband and an avid deep sea fisherman who loved to laugh and socialize with family and friends. He will be remembered for his magnetic personality and big heart, for his time coaching the 49ers youth football league, and love of sci-fi.

A viewing is scheduled for Saturday, July 25th at Brown Funeral Home South Berkeley Chapel in Inwood from 6PM-8PM. All are welcome to attend; however, in light of the current pandemic the family will not be present and asks that masks and social distancing guidelines be followed. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Autism Speaks via the Sorry Souls Motorcycle Club at 1990 K Street NW Second Floor Washington, DC 20006 of which he was a founding member. A private burial will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
