Obituary for Retha Mildred Bartgis (Myers)

Retha M. Bartgis, 90, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully September 26, 2020 at the Hospice of the Panhandle.

She was born December 22, 1929 in Berkeley County, the daughter of the late Alonza and Ida C. Franklin Myers. She married her cherished husband of 67 years, the late Robert B. Bartgis, on July 31, 1950.

She is survived by her sons Robert Michael Bartgis and wife Denise, and Rodney L. Bartgis and wife Debra, grandchildren Rachel Bartgis and husband Will, and Robert Stefan Bartgis, sister Charlotte Wood, brother Byron Myers and wife Mary, in-laws Carol, Saralie, and Sherry Bartgis, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sisters Anna Ruth Myers, Hilda Love Myers, Pauline McDaniel, and brother Paul Myers.

She was a graduate of Hedgesville High School (1947) and studied elementary education at Shepherd College for three years. A strong proponent of the importance of learning, she retired from the Berkeley County Board of Education after 23 years as a tutorial instructor at Hedgesville Elementary.

She was a life-long member of the Tomahawk Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the church choir and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was a member of the Berkeley County Association of Retired School Employees, Berkeley County Historical Society, and The Nature Conservancy of West Virginia.

The family would like to thank the staff of Berkeley Senior Services, Hospice of the Panhandle, War Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Center, plus Fay Bell, Kenny and Dorothy Corbin, Terry and Shirley McDaniel, and Frank and Irene Stillwell, members of the Tomahawk Presbyterian Church, family members, and many other friends, for their help, love, and care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cemetery Fund of the Tomahawk Presbyterian Church, PO Box 2204, Hedgesville, WV 25427 and the Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 2nd, at 3 p.m. at the Tomahawk Cemetery, Hedgesville, with the Rev. John Cushwa and Rev. Bill Barnett officiating. Visitors are asked to wear masks, practice social distancing, and follow recommended guidelines.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Tomahawk Presbyterian Church at a later date.
